PERCEVAL SPENCER: (1762-1812) British Prime Minister 1809-12. A.L.S., Sp Perceval, two pages, 4to, Downing Street, 28th July 1809, to a gentleman. Perceval, in his capacity as Chancellor of the Exchequer, writes regarding his correspondent's financial arrangements, in part, 'Understanding from Mr. Huskisson, that upon the last occasion of his seeing you, it was settled that you should take measures partly by taking Bills upon the Exchange here, and partly by directing your friends abroad to draw upon you, for realizing £300,000, the intended aid to Austria for July and August, as soon as possible on the Continent, but that your arrangements should be made in such a manner as to leave to us as long as possible a power over the money; I cannot help feeling anxious upon the receipt of the late news from Austria, that you should suspend taking any measures that might pledge you for more than a moiety of the above sum', and concluding by asking his correspondent to meet Mr. Huskisson at the Treasury on the following Monday or Tuesday.
