LEWIS NORMAN: (1908-2003) British travel writer and novelist. A significant A.L.S., Norman, one page, 8vo, High Holborn, London, 25th July 1961, to Michael [Howard]. Lewis writes to his long-time publisher at Jonathan Cape to clarify a situation and confirm his decision to move to Collins, stating, in part, 'I did not sign up with Collins ten days ago, but in fact let them see a portion of a still unfinished MS at about that time. I only received their proposals the day before yesterday. The fact remains however that I have decided to make a change. I sincerely regard this as a reflection upon me rather than upon yourselves. By making some sort of fresh start I suppose I am hoping to do something to lever myself out of a rut. Believe me, in view of our personal friendship, I am filled both with embarrasment and regret at having to make the move'. With a red ink annotation ( 'Lewis') in an unidentified hand alongside the signature. VG
