SIMON CLAUDE: (1913-2005) French Writer. Awarded with the Nobel prize for Literature in 1985. a very interesting A.L.S., `Claude Simon´, one page, folio, Sabres, 17th November 1987, in French. Simon thanks and responds to his correspondent´s letter and to the four questions about his work he was asked about, stating in part ` 1) Lorsque je commence à écrire, je n´ai pas de plan. Seulement la vague - très vague - idée d´une forme, d´un "ton". Plusieurs plans s´élaborent, se détruisent et se remplacent au cours du travail d´écriture. 2) Un personnage de roman est et reste pour moi un inconnu. 3) Maitres en litérature: Conrad, Proust, Joyce, Faulkner. 4) A partir de L´herbe chacun de mes romans répond de façon différente à des problèmes différents. Je n´en préfère aucun´ (Translation: " 1) When I start writing, I don't have a plan. Only the vague - very vague - idea of a form, of a "tone". Several plans are developed, destroyed and replaced during the writing process. 2) A character in a novel is and remains unknown to me. 3) Masters of literature: Conrad, Proust, Joyce, Faulkner. 4) Starting with L´herbe, each of my novels responds in a different way to different problems.
