Die Orpheus-Szene zählt zu einer Gruppe von Aquarellen mit mythologischen Darstellungen, die 1958 in Villeneuve am Genfer See entstand. Oskar Kokoschka widmete dieses Blatt 1959 anlässlich eines Besuches dem Pianisten Wilhelm Kempff, der in der Casa Orfeo in Positano wohnte.
