Book Dealing with the Question of the Emancipation of British Jews – Pesth, 1830
Verhandlungen in Betreff der Emancipation der Juden im großbritanischen Parlamente 1830. Pesth: Otto Wigand, 1830. German.
"Negotiations about emancipation of Jews in the Great British Parliament 1830 – a collection as complete as possible".
The British Parliament discussed in 1830 a new version of the oath of allegiance, meant to enable Catholics to participate in political life and public service. The Jewish question was raised as well: the Board of Deputies of British Jews sent a petition to the Parliament and to the House of Lords requesting equal rights for Jews. In the following years local authorities were more forthcoming than parliament: in 1835 David Salomons was elected Sheriff of London; following this appointment the Parliament changed the law and Jewish Sheriffs had the right to take an oath in accordance with their faith. In 1837 Moses Montefiore was elected Sheriff of the city. 58 pp, 20.5 cm. Fair-good condition. Wear and stains. Ink-stamps and ownership inscriptions. Reinforcing paper strips. Original paper wrappers and a new cardboard cover.
