Letters and Documents from the Estate of Shaul Avigur, of the Ministry of Defense Founders
Collection of letters and documents from the estate of Shaul Avigur (1899-1978). Avigur (Meirov) was one of Tel-Hai fighters, one of the "Haganah" leaders, commander of the Mossad LeAliya Beth organization during most of its existence, Deputy Minister of Defense during the 1948 war and head of "Nativ – Lishkat Hakesher" (that maintained contact with Jews in the Soviet Union) in the 1950s-60s. Avigur was instrumental in forming SHAI (the intelligence wing of the Hagganah which preceeded the Intelligence Services of the State of Israel and acquired arms for the Hagganah and for IDF). Avigur's sister, Zipora, was married to Moshe Sharet (whose sisters were married to Dov Hoz and Eliyahu Golomb). Avigur, Hoz, Golomb and Sharet were referred to as "The Four Brothers-in- Law" and were of the Hagganah leaders. It was often said that the Yishuv existed due to "Miracles and the four brothers-in-law".
Included are: *38 letters sent to Avigur (mainly from his father) during the years 1948-1950. In 1948 Avigur was in Geneva and the letters concerned updates and news from Israel, in particular in the military area. *Four letters to Avigur from his wife, Sarah. * Two copies of Avigur's book "Im Dor HaHagganah", one copy with a dedication to Israel Galili and his wife, the other copy with a dedication by Avigur to a relative. * Copy of a booklet in memory of Gur Meirov (Avigur's son). * Booklet in memory of Shaul Avigur. *Handwritten composition about "HaShomer" organization. Portrait photo of Avigur. Sizes and conditions vary.
