***Auction Highlight*** 1853-D Dahlonega Large D Gold Liberty Half Eagle $5 Graded ms61 By SEGS. Up for auction is a 1853-d Large D $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle, Winter 29-V variety, ms61 SEGS. Large D free of the stem and feather. The 1853-D Liberty half eagle is an available date in the context of the series, from a mintage of 89,678 pieces. The date is scarce in higher AU grades, and Mint State examples are rare. Doug Winter estimates 275-325 examples are extant in all grades, with 15-20 coins in Mint State. The present coin is an attractive Mint State specimen, with lustrous orange-gold surfaces. The design elements are sharply detailed, except for a touch of softness on the star centers and the eagle's claws. Tied for 10th finest.
