A Letter by the Mother-in-Law of Rabbi Natan of Breslov "Ba'alat Ha'Techinot" to Her Son Av Beit Din of Kremnitz – Torah Novellae Handwritten by Him
A letter handwritten and signed by the well-known Rebbetzen Henna the wife of Rabbi David Zvi Auerbach Av Beit Din of Molyev (Mogilev) to her son Rabbi Meir Auerbach Av Beit Din of Kremnitz.
Molyev, 1820.
The letter is written in Yiddish. She signs it with the words: "Your mother's words … Henna the daughter of Rabbi Aharon Ha'Cohen".
Beside the words "Your mother's words", the words "Your friend who prays for you always". At first sight it seems that these words had also been written by the mother, the Rebbetzen; however, they are written in the masculine gender! The script is also slightly different from the mother's. it is most likely that these words were written by another family member, maybe her husband, Rabbi David Zvi Auerbach. It should be noted that the language resembles the style of Rabbi Natan of Breslov, who ended some of his letters to his son with the words: "Praying for you".
On the reverse side of the leaf, the address was handwritten by the Rebbetzen. There are also short Torah novellae handwritten by her son Rabbi Meir Auerbach, Av beit Din of Kremnitz.
Her history
The Rebbetzen Henna Auerbach, the daughter of Rabbi Aharon Ha'Cohen of Brody, was the wife of Rabbi David Zvi Av Beit Din of Kremnitz and Molyev (died in 1808) who was the son of Rabbi Aryeh Leibush Av Beit Din of Stanislav, a disciple of the Ba'al Shem Tov.
The Rebbetzen was a well-known pious who wrote several Techinot (pleas), one of which, titled "Et Ratzon", was printed in many editions of Techinot books.
Her sons and sons-in-law were prominent rabbis – the most well- known of them being Rabbi Natan of Breslov, the leading disciple of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov and the writer of his doctrine.
Her son, the addressee of the letter Rabbi Menachem Mendel Av Beit Din of Kremnitz, was the son-in-law of Rabbi Shmuel Av Beit Din of Zalzitz. Among his descendants: Rabbi David Zvi author of "Malbushei Tahara" and the Auerbach family of Safed.
