The notebook begins with a long sermon for Shabbat Ha'Gadol by the rabbi of Skierniewice, the Rebbe of Ostrowiec, Rabbi Meir Yechiel Halstock, who in 1882, at the age of 28, was chosen to serve as the rabbi of Skierniewice.

The Rebbe Rabbi Meir Yechiel of Ostrowiec (1851-1928) was one of the leading Rebbes of his generation. He studied with Rabbi Elimelech of Grodzinsk and Rabbi Yehoshua of Kutna. He corresponded with the most prominent rabbis of his time such as the "Sefat Emet", Rabbi Chaim Halberstam of Sanz and more. In 1882, at the age of 28, he was chosen to serve as the rabbi of Skierniewice and since 1889, for 39 years, served as the rabbi of Ostrowiec.
He was known for his piousness and asceticism and it is told that for forty years he used to fast continuously during the day, eating only a meager meal at night.
Among his disciples: Rabbi Kalonimus Kalman Shapira, the Rebbe of Piaseczno.
Most of his writings were never printed and were therefore lost.
