Halachic Responsum Sent by an Anonymous Rabbi to One the Rabbis of the Sofer Family
A leaf with a Halachic responsum which was most likely sent to one of the rabbis of the Sofer Family (maybe Rabbi Shimon Sofer Av Beit Din of Krakow). The source of the leaf is the archive of the rabbis of the Sofer family. Undoubtedly, the writer was one of the geniuses of the generation. The date of the letter is missing; yet, it was most likely written during the late 18th century or early 19th century.
The responsum deals with what the rabbis, the addressee of the letter, had wanted: "to introduce a new Halacha according to which if the letter did not resemble a different letter, but was only written upside down, it was Kosher post factum".
The writer presents evidence to the contrary: that it is invalid. Among others, he cites the "Me'il Tzedakah" Responsa by Rabbi Yonah Landsofer, one of the rabbis of Prague.
At the end of the leaf, the rabbi writes: "U have seen by the Maharan [?] of Krakow…"
The end of the responsum is missing.
Blue leaf written on one of its sides.
Condition: Good. Wrinkles.
