A Letter by the Mother of the Chazon Ish to her Son-in-Law Rabbi Shmuel Greinman – Kosovo, 1930
A Yiddish letter handwritten and signed by the Rebbetzen Rasha Leah Kerlitz, the mother of the Chazon Ish. Kosovo, 1930. Sent to her son-in-law, Rabbi Shmuel Greinman.
The Rebbetzen Rasha Leah Kerlitz (1852-1940) was the daughter of Rabbi Shaul Katzenelboigen Av Beit Din of Kosovo and Kobryn.
In 1974, she married Rabbi Shemarayahu Yosef Kerlitz (1852-1916), who was appointed the rabbi of Kosovo in 1882, replacing his father-in-law.
The Rebbetzen Rasha Leah was known for her piousness and modesty. Her nine sons and sons-in-law were all great Torah scholars and rabbis. Among them: Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Kerlitz, the Chazon Ish; Rabbi Meir kerlitz Av Beit Din of Lekhavitsh and one of the leaders of Moetzet Gedolei Ha'Torah and more. Among her sons-in-law: Rabbi Ya'akov Yisrael Kanivsky author of "Kehilot Ya'akov" (The Steipler).
In her old age, she immigrated to the Land of Israel, where she lived for several years in Bnei Berak, near her son, the Chazon Ish, and her youngest daughter, the Steipler's wife.
