Touching Letter of Recommendation by Rabbi Meir Ashkenazi for Rabbi Shmuel David Varshavchik – Shanghai, 1946 – Signatures of the Rabbis of the Committee of the Talmud Torah
Letter of recommendation and gratitude by Rabbi Meir Ashkenazi the Rabbi of the Jewish community of Shanghai, on behalf of "the activists of our community and specially the committee of the Talmud Torah…" to Rabbi Shmuel David Varshavchil "for what he has done for the Haredi education here". A long, interesting letter, written on the official stationery of Rabbi Meir Ashkenazi. Rosh Chodesh Tamuz, 1946.
Rabbi Meir Ashkenazi touchingly describes the activities of Rabbi Varshavchik for the religious education in Shanghai. "And now his departure from us is indeed difficult for us, yet at the same time, we are happy that his present path leads to a place that is better for his future…"
Signed among others: Rabbi Baruch Yosef Stein, Rabbi Ya'akov Neiman, and eaight more members of the committee. Rabbi Meir Ashkenazi is also signed as the chairman of the Talmud Torah and Beit Ya'akov of Shabghai.
Rabbi Shmuel David Varshavchik had many disciples in the yeshivas of "Rabbeinu Ya'akov Yosef" in New York and "Knesset Chizkiyahu" in Kefar Hassidim. Died on the 15th of Shevat 748 [1988]" (cited from what is written on his gravestone).
