A Photograph of Rabbi Aviezer Bornstein the Chairman of Va'ad Ha'Hatzalah, with His Handwritten Dedication to His Sister the Bride, a Holocaust Survivor - Munich, [1947]
An official photograph of Rabbi Aviezer Bornstein, the chairman of Va'ad Ha'Hatzalah, which was given to his young sister, a Holocaust survivor, who was then a young bride.
Rabbi Alter Moshe Mordechai Bornstein was the last rabbi of Gabrovo. He died in Treblinka in Av 1943.
His only son was Rabbi Aviezer Bornstein, the owner of the photograph (1918-1996). He was the chairman of Va'ad Ha'Hatzalah in Germany. Within this framework, he founded the committee for publishing books, which printed dozens of basic Hebrew books for She'erit Ha'Pletah.
In his youth, he studied at Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin of the Mahram Shapira of Lublin. During World War II, he fled from Warsaw to Vilnius and then to Grodno and Bialystok. He survived the camps of Auschwitz and Dachau.
His sister Chava, who received the photograph, was born in 1916. She served as the secretary of her father and was the commander of the branch of Beitar in Gabrovo. After the Holocaust, she married Rabbi Moshe Bernstein and helped him with his public activity in the camps.
On the reverse side of the photograph, a handwritten dedication by Rabbi Aviezer:
"Motza'ei Shabbat Kodesh the 14th of Kislev 1946. Here in Munich.
As a symbol of a loyal and eternal bond, I present my photograph as a gift to the gentle bride who is the apple of my eye, Miss Chava'le Bornstein the daughter of the rabbi of Gabrovo… (the last line is unreadable)".
