MUSIC AND THEATER - ANTONA-TRAVERSI Camillo (1857 - 1934) - Italy – Paris - Autograph letter signed, not dated, by the Italian playwright and librettist. To a friend and Maestro, he writes of his activity “…E qui lavoro à miei Strozini (3 atti [1906]) e a un gran dramma passionale che m’è ordinato dall’Italia…”. He had had to flee Italy to avoid an arrest warrant because he was involved in a trial for forged promissory notes. He then writes of the request made by Di Martino to the correspondent “….a voler scrivere per il Proscenio qualche bello, e sincero articolo sulle dieci recite che il comico Scarpetta darà a Parigi in questo mese…”. But Antona-Traversi's opinion of Scarpetta's initiative is entirely unfavorable: “..Lo Scarpetta, a parer mio, è un pazzo! Non farà un soldo, e si farà forse coglionare! Chi vuole che vada a sentirlo recitare delle commedie francesi ridotte in dialetto napoletano? Innegabilmente è un comicone; ma della comicità volgare e triviale: del lazzo partenopeo, della risata sgangherata ottenuta con mezzi spesso artificiali…”. He goes on to say that there is no comparison between Scarpetta and Novelli and that the former is only “…l’ultimo rappresentante del Pulcinella napoletano…”. The playwright still solicits the article for Proscenio, but urges the correspondent to be frank and to say ”pane al pane”. Antona-Traversi ends letter by apologizing “…Se ancora non le ho spedito le mie povere 50 lire ; ma lo farò, resti certo, che è un sacro dovere mio…”. 10 pp. In-8.
