MUSIC AND THEATER - MODENA Gustavo (1803 - 1861) - Italian actor - Autograph letter signed, dated “Bologna il 6 Marzo 1831” by the Italian actor and patriot, one of the most important of the first half of XIXth century. Addressed to the Director of the Theaters and Public Performances of Ferrara. Modena proposes to the director of the Ferrara Theaters to make “…una circolare a tutti i comitati provvisori di Governo, annunciando che mi propongo di girare per i paesi liberi con un repertorio adattato alle circostanze…”. The circumstances cited by Modena in the text are extremely complex: on February 5, 1831 following a Risorgimento insurrection in Emilia Romagna (particularly in Modena, Bologna, and Parma) the United Italian Provinces were declared, which ruled from February 5 to April 26, 1831, repressed in blood by the Austro-Pontiff army. The United Italian Provinces were an early attempt at national unity against foreign rule. Modena was so politically active that in 1831 he joined Mazzini's Giovine Italia and was forced into exile first in Belgium then in London. In memory of his political commitment to his homeland, a bust was made and placed on the Janiculum Hill (Rome), along with 228 other patriots who worked for the formation of the Italian state. - This lot is located in EU.
