British India 1882 Oriental Bank Corporation Bill of Exchange, Calcutta to London
An original bill of exchange issued by the Oriental Bank Corporation, dated 3 March 1882, drawn in Calcutta and payable in London at their Threadneedle Street branch. This “Second of Exchange” was issued for £112 sterling, payable to Leo Zauder Esq. and signed by the bank’s representatives.
Printed on watermarked paper, the front bears a British Indian revenue stamp (One Anna) tied with a Calcutta datestamp. The reverse shows an endorsement and another partial stamp. The document features elegant copperplate handwriting and a partially embossed seal.
Bank History:
The Oriental Bank Corporation, chartered by Royal Charter, was one of the earliest British banks to operate extensively across Asia, with branches in India, Ceylon, China, and Australia. It played a critical role in British colonial trade finance throughout the 19th century.
