В серии «Из лучших детских книг», выпускаемой издательством «Художник РСФСР», вышли такие книги, как «Цирк», «Как рубанок сделал рубанок», «Мороженое» и «Вчера и сегодня», созданные писателем С.Я. Маршаком и художником В.В. Лебедевым. Новые принципы художественного языка, которые Лебедев успешно применял в плакатах «Окон РОСТА» в несколько переработанном виде, он использовал в иллюстрациях к детским книгам данной серии. Рисунки Лебедева представляют собой принципиально новое явление в детской книжной графике. Поэтому Лебедев считается подлинным пионером в создании иллюстрированной советской детской книги.
