A CHINESE JADE OWL, HONGSHAN CULTURE (c. 4700–2900 BC) - A rare green jade owl from the Hongshan culture, expertly carved in a stylized geometric form with prominent eyes and broad wings. The sculpture embodies the spiritual symbolism of the owl as a guardian and messenger. Height 8.5 cm. PROVENANCE From a private Canadian collection. Formerly from Mr. Huang Zhi-Ming, a Taiwanese private collector. Mr. Huang acquired the jade pieces in Hong Kong. Some from Mr. Lai Loy (1926 - 2012), a jade dealer on Hollywood Road well known for handling and supplying archaic jade pieces to collectors, museums and other dealers and some some from private collectors in Hong Kong.
