Provenance: from the estate of Josef Eduard Šrom (1888–1942), a mechanical engineer and Czechoslovak diplomat in Moscow and Vienna, as well as the author of works on Russia and Jan Kubelík. He graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ČVUT in 1912. In 1920, he completed diplomatic and consular courses at the Faculty of Law, Charles University. In 1921, he was first assigned to the newly established office in Moscow, where he served as an intelligence officer, later as a ministerial secretary in the editorial department of the intelligence section, and subsequently in the economic section.
In 1924, he was reassigned to the diplomatic mission in Moscow, where he served until 1930 and published the first major monograph on the Soviet Union: Soviet Russia (1924). After returning to Prague, he worked as a departmental counselor, and in 1931 he was transferred as a legation secretary (later, in 1934, a legation counselor) to the embassy in Austria. He served there until 1938, and after the embassy`s closure, he worked at the general consulate in Vienna. Following the occupation of the Czech lands, he was transferred to the Protectorate Ministry of Education but also became involved in the domestic resistance movement. After Reinhard Heydrich`s taking office, he was arrested and executed during the so-called "Heydrich terror" on June 20, 1942, in Prague.
