The work is a study for the painting "Apple Picking in the Chernigov Province" (1898) from the collection of the State Russian Museum. In 1928, the work, together with studies for it, was exhibited at the Posthumous Exhibition of Paintings by Academician of Painting N.A. Sergeev, organized by the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts.

Sergeev Nikolai Alexandrovich (1855, Kharkov - 1929).
From 1876 he studied in St. Petersburg with L. Lagorio, from the late 1870s. attended the Academy of Arts. In 1886 he received a large encouragement medal from the Academy, and in 1887 he became its “Honorary Free Fellow.” In 1910 received the title of academician. Since 1878, he was an active participant in art exhibitions at the Academy of Arts, the St. Petersburg Society of Artists (founding member), TPHV, and the Society of Russian Watercolor Painters. In the 1910s one of the leaders of the Society named after. A.I. Kuindzhi. Member of the All-Russian Society for the Encouragement of Arts (its chairman since 1928). In 1929, his posthumous exhibition took place in Moscow. The works are in the State Russian Museum and many other museums in Russia and Ukraine.
