Voloshin Maximilian Aleksandrovich (1877, Kyiv - 1932, Koktebel).
Symbolist poet, critic, essayist, artist, one of the most significant figures of the Russian Silver Age. He visited Paris, where he listened to lectures at the Sorbonne and the Louvre, studied a lot in libraries, traveled to Spain, Italy, and the Bolearic Islands. Voloshin was greatly influenced by his first wife, the artist M. Sabashnikova, who was fond of the occult and theosophy. Lived on a small estate in Koktebel (Crimea). As a true representative of modern culture, he was interested in the problems of the synthesis of arts, and accompanied his literary and philosophical studies with painting. Most of his pictorial heritage consists of Crimean landscapes made using watercolor technique. He wrote articles on contemporary art, reports on Parisian exhibitions, reviews of new books, and gave lectures on literature and art in Feodosia and Kerch. Paintings by M. Voloshin are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and the house-museum of M.A. Voloshin in Koktebel, in many private collections.
