Rare Colonial Peruvian Coquera, Upper Peru (present-day Bolivia), Viceroyalty school from the end of the 18th century
In silver, total measurements approx.: 16 x 15 x 12 cm. Weight: 273 grams. Zinc base plate to protect from moisture. These types of toiletries were very popular among the wealthy and noble classes in the Viceroyalty of Peru. We know several types of coqueras, whose use in the New World extended from Pre-Columbian times, some made of gourd, others of wood, richly decorated with silver, and, like this example, in fine silver. Being this model up for auction with its decoration of garlands, roses and trompe l'oeil, clearly influenced by the French Rococo. Bibliography: Vid. Palomero Páramo, JM Silver carved from the Indies, Huelva, 1992; SILVERWARE OF VIRECRENAL PERU 1535 – 1825; Catalog of the exhibition of the same name.
