San Jerónimo, Mexican Colonial School of the 17th century, oil on canvas, dimensions: 83 x 70 cm
Oil on canvas depicting Saint Jerome in penitence, a common image in 17th century Mexican colonial art. The saint is shown in a reflective attitude, with his torso bare, holding a stone in his hand as a symbol of his asceticism. At his side is the lion, his faithful companion, and various objects such as books and a skull that allude to his work as a translator and to his meditation on death. The work uses contrasts of light and shadow to emphasize the drama and spirituality of the scene.
