Spanish School of the 16th Century - Virgin and Child
Carved in wood and covered with polychrome. Dimensions 61 × 24 × 17 cm. This work captures a maternal image of the Virgin holding the Infant Jesus, who in turn holds a small orb in his left hand, a symbol of his dominion over the world. The Virgin, dressed in a time-worn gold and blue cloak, conveys serenity and protection. This representation, common in 16th-century Spanish sculpture, emphasizes Mary's humanity as a mother, while also glorifying her divine status. The iconography of the Virgin and Child was a key motif in the religious art of the Counter-Reformation, reinforcing faith through her protective presence.
