FERMÍN AGUAYO (Burgos 1926 - Paris 1977) - Infante - Study Number 6 (1960)
Oil on paper attached to canvas. Dimensions: 65 x 50 cm. Signed: "a/60" (bottom right corner); "aguayo 60" (on the back). Provenance: Hélène Bokanowski Collection; Galerie Jeanne Bucher, Paris 1961. This portrait of the Infanta Margarita, inspired by the work of Velázquez, reflects the talent of Fermín Aguayo, a Spanish painter exiled in Paris. Born in 1926 in Sotillo, his life was marked by the Civil War, which forced him to move to Zaragoza and then to Paris in 1952, where he achieved recognition. In 1960, after a period of abstraction, he returned to figuration influenced by Velázquez, creating several interpretations of the Infanta. In this work, Aguayo reinterprets the original composition, focusing on the figure of the Infanta and eliminating the space surrounding her on the Prado canvas. Her palette of pinks, browns and greys and the geometric design of the skirt reflect her refined style and artistic transition. This piece, exhibited in 1961, is part of a series that engages with Spanish tradition, as did Picasso and Dalí, demonstrating Velázquez's enduring influence on modern art. Located in international warehouse.
