Irma Cohn was born on July 22, 1914, in Greifenhagen (today Gryfino, Poland). She grew up with her older brother Max in their parent’s household. Irma’s mother was Emma Cohn, née Itzig. The family lived in 1928 in the building 28, ten years later in Fischerstraße 10.
It is not known when Irma came to “Heim Isenburg" and whether she worked there or was supervised. In May 1937, Irma Cohn was deregistered to Idstein in the curative institution Kalmenhof.
She was admitted to the women's concentration camp Lichtenburg (Saxony) under the Nazi persecution to an unspecified date. When this camp was dissolved, she was moved along with many other female prisoners in the Ravensbrück concentration camp in May 1939. There Irma Cohn was detained for almost three years. In the spring of 1942, 1600 women in the Ravensbrück concentration camp were selected and killed by gas in the Bernburg Euthanasia Centre. Among them was Irma Cohn. She died on February 13, 1942.
Irma's father died in Stralsund in 1926. Her mother, Emma Cohn, was expelled after the November Pogroms in 1938 from her apartment in Greifenhagen and had to live henceforth in a scrapped railway wagon at the port of Greifenhagen. In 1939, she moved to a cousin in Szczecin. From there, Emma Cohn was deported in the night from the 12th to 13th February 1940 in the ghetto of Piaski (Lublin, Poland). She died there on July 30, 1940.
Irma's brother, Max Cohn, was imprisoned in the prison of Brandenburg on the Havel since May 1939. On July 4, 1940, he was shot in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
Ernst Daniel Goldschmidt (December 9, 1895 – December 10, 1972) was a scholar and commentator on prayer and poetry; he edited, corrected and published critical and scholarly editions of the Siddur and prayer cycles according to the customs of various communities and denominations. He is the author of The Passover Haggadah, Its Origins and History Through the Ages and was one of the proofreaders of the Koren Bible. He began his higher education at the University of Breslau and then transferred to the University of Berlin. In parallel with his studies at the university, he studied at the city's rabbinical school. In 1925, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the works of the Greek statesman and rhetorician Aeschines. He completed his studies and was hired by the Royal Library of Berlin. In addition, he was a member of the editorial board and was responsible for writing the articles on Jewish inconnuma in the General Catalogue of Incunabula published in 1925. He also began to take an interest in the study of prayer and piyyut, especially in relation to its various forms. After the Nazis came to power and the law on the restoration of the professional civil service was passed, his employment conditions worsened. Due to the tightening of the Nazi policy towards the Jews, in 1936 he and all other Jewish employees were dismissed from the library. In the same year (1936) he immigrated to Israel and began working at the National and University Library. Later, he was also a member of the editorial board of the Jewish Bibliography project. After working at the National Library for over 25 years, he retired, but it was then that he began to work more vigorously on the publication of siddurs and prayer cycles in a scholarly publication under the direction of the Cycle on Ashkenazi Customs for All Their Branches. He died in 1972 while working on the book "Machzor Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah According to the Customs of Ashkenazi Jews."
