Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. This finely painted scene shows two characters typical of Bronnikoff's genre painting. They are transported to a street scene in Rome, where Bronnikoff had been based since 1865. The works 'The Wandering Musicians' and 'The Old Man and the Poor Man' by Bronnikov hang in the Tretyakov Gallery, while the sketch 'The Expelled Man on his Friend's Grave' is owned by the Schadrinski Palace. The type of grey-haired monk found there could also have been used in the work offered here.
