[ANTIPHONAL]
Choirbook, in Latin, decorated manuscript on vellum
[Spain
16th century]
Codex on 77 leaves of vellum (one of a series of such volumes from the original community), wanting 14 leaves (resewn at a later date with string through holes made a few mm into the leaves away from the spine and thus hard to collate, however, gaps in early foliation showing the losses: 1-2, 6-21, 23-26, 29, 31-8, 41-44, 47-60, 62-73, 75-81, 83-91), written in 5 lines of Iberian liturgical script accompanied by music on a 5-line red stave (as consistent with late Spanish musical notation, and not indicating polyphony), rubrics in red, initials in ornate penstrokes, or multi-coloured acanthus leaves (red, blue and yellow), two of these with coloured geometric interlace patterns overlaid, last gathering a near-contemporary addition containing Psalms in single column of 19 lines with red initials, two leaves cut at base, cockled in places throughout with some old water damage, some scuff marks and discoloured areas, overall fair condition, 345 by 260mm; early binding of massive wooden boards made up from smaller wooden panels and covered in brown leather, somewhat battered overall and tears at head and foot of spine, but solid in binding
