LANDER RICHARD: (1804-1834) English Explorer. Lander and his brother were the first Europeans to follow the course of the river Niger and discover that it led to the Atlantic. Lander died at the very early age of 29 during his third and last expedition to Africa. Extremely rare A.N.S., `Lander´, to a clipped 5 x 3 piece. Lander reports on the Western Africa expedition of 1825, leaded by Hugh Clapperton, and states in full `Lander Servent to The Late Cpt Clapperton, Commander of his Majestys Affrican Mission of discovery and only Survivor.´, and alongside Lander lists the members of the expedition who died, saying `Died - Cpt Clapperton - Cpt Pearce - Dr. Morrison - Dr. Dickson - Marchants, Mr. Houston - Mr. James - Servents, Doven - Clumbous - Lang..´ A document of very interesting and historic content. The irregularly clipped piece has been affixed to an oblong 8vo page. F £250-350 Hugh Clapperton (1788-1827) Scottish Naval Officer and Explorer. Clapperton died on 13th April 1827 near Sokoto, in present-day Nigeria. Lander remained as the only European survivor of the expedition.
