Dustin Lee Hoffman (Los Angeles, August 8, 1937) is an American actor.

In 1967, Mike Nichols' The Graduate transformed him in a few months from an unknown character actor to a star nominated for an Oscar, who would mark the seventies with some intense and significant performances. A versatile actor, "sober, phlegmatic, energetic", he moves with ease from the thriller (Straw Dogs, 1971, Marathon Man, 1976) to the comedy (Tootsie, 1982), from the realistic genre of denunciation (Midnight Cowboy, 1969) to the political film (All the President's Men, 1975), from the adventure genre (Papillon, 1973) to the fantasy genre (Hook, 1991).

In his long career he has portrayed characters of strong drama and complexity "with which he crosses more than thirty years of American cinema": from Little Big Man (1970) by Arthur Penn to the meek husband of Straw Dogs (1971) by Sam Peckinpah, from the father fighting for custody of his son in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), to the poignant Raymond, the autistic man in Rain Man (1988). For these last two films he won the Oscar for best actor, while in 1996 he received the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in Venice.
