Sean Justin Penn (born August 17, 1960 in Santa Monica, California) is an American actor, director, and film producer.
He has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor five times, winning twice. A chameleonic performer, he is known for his roles in famous films including Carlito's Way, Dead Man Walking, The Thin Red Line, Mystic River (Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2004), 21 Grams, and Milk (Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2009), and for directing, producing, and writing Into the Wild.
He has won the main acting awards at the most prestigious festivals; the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival for Dead Man Walking, the Prix d'interprétation masculine at the Cannes Film Festival for She's So Lovely and twice the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for Lies, Kisses, Dolls & Bastards and 21 Grams.
