MICHELE ALBORETO - CARD WITH AUTOGRAPH AND ENVELOPE WITH FERRARI BRAND
Michele Alboreto (Milan, 23 December 1956 – Klettwitz, 25 April 2001) was an Italian racing driver.
European Formula 3 champion in 1980, he spent a good part of his career in Formula 1, where he won five Grand Prix and where he almost won the world title in 1985. During his career in the top category he raced for teams such as Tyrrell, Ferrari, Arrows, Lola and Minardi. He is the last Italian to have won in Formula 1 with Ferrari and to compete for the Formula 1 drivers' world championship with Ferrari. Compared to Alberto Ascari, he was aggressive and skilled in tuning: he knew how to provide precise and detailed indications to improve the performance of the car to engineers and mechanics. Alongside his Formula 1 races, he took part in many competitions on covered-wheel cars, winning, among others, the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1997 and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2001, the year in which he died at the Lausitzring while testing an Audi R8 Sport. The cause of the accident – as the investigation into the accident concluded – was not driver error but the progressive puncture of the left rear tyre, the final failure of which triggered the pile-up that caused the German prototype to hit the barriers at the edge of the track, go over them and overturn onto the other side.
