Malyavin Philip Andreevich (1869, Samara Region – 1940, Nice).

Representative of Russian modernist style. Since 1885 he went through novitiate in St. Panteleymon's monastery in Athens, worked in icon painting studio. Through help of a sculptor, V.A. Beklemishev, he left for Petersburg and entered an Academy of arts, where he studied under the guidance of I. E. Repin, P. P. Chistyakov, V.V. Vereshchagin, in particular (1892-1899).
Participated in exhibitions of “Itinerants Comradeship” and “World of Art”, was a member of “The Union of Russian Artists”. Made his mark after, he had been awarded a silver medal during the International exhibition of 1990 in Paris, which marked his painting “The Laugh” (1899, Gallery of Modern Art, Venice).
Since 1990 he lived mostly in his country estate in the vicinity of Aksinyino village near Ryazan, and visiting Petersburg and Moscow from time to time.
In 1918 he moved to Ryazan, and in 1920 – to Moscow. Was delegated by “The Union of Russian Artists” to the Kremlin, where he painted the portraits of V.I. Lenin and other party leaders from nature.
In 1922 he emigrated to France.
The artist’s works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and many other European museums.
