Virgin of the Little Bird, Rhine Gothic, Germany, 15th century, 60 x 23 x 19 cm
Madonna of the Little Bird, made of wood in the Rhine Gothic style, 15th century. This delicate work reflects the serenity characteristic of German religious imagery of the period. The stylized treatment of the clothing and the serene facial features of the Virgin give the piece a deep spirituality. The Gothic features in the clothing provide a feeling of austerity, typical of medieval sculpture.
